THANK YOU
WRI provides research and expert analysis to help countries work together toward climate solutions that are ambitious and based on mutual trust and confidence.
1) To capitalize on the promise of Durban and to build an atmosphere of trust and reciprocity between countries, issues of equity will have to be discussed and reshaped in an open and constructive manner. The World Resources Institute (WRI) and Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice (MRFCJ) are facilitating the Climate Justice Dialogue to ensure that the new agreement is informed by science, considers the specific needs of the most vulnerable populations, and catalyzes sustainable development.
2) The Open Climate Network (OCN) is an independent, international partnership that tracks and reports on the progress of key countries on climate change. The network seeks to accelerate progress toward a low-emissions future by gathering, analyzing, and sharing information related to national climate policies around the globe. http://www.openclimatenetwork.org/
"This is a brand new challenge for the whole world to figure out how do we adapt to the changing climate, is something we are all going to face together, some people will be hit harder than other so its an opportunity for the global community to support those who are in danger" - Heather McGray (WRI Senior associate and adaptation expert)
WRI envisions a world where poor and vulnerable people are more resilient to the serious ecological, economic, and social challenges posed by climate change.
Adaptation is the process of responding to these changes in the climate, climate change is a new issue, in that we know all about it, we have to learn about it so we go long.
Poor people have few adaptation options, scientists want these people to think about these changes first. With climate change we notice the big inequality the world is suffering.
Anyway adaption has to come.
Increasingly frequent extreme weather events, record annual global average temperatures and disruptive seasonal changes all provide growing evidence of anthropogenic climate change. The fossil fuel-based growth trajectory of the last century is no longer sustainable or economically viable. The world’s nations, businesses, and citizens must fundamentally rethink current energy policies, practices, and actions.
The recent National Climate Assessment states that is "virtually certain" that global temperatures will continue to warm throughout the reminder of the century, and the longer we delay reducing greenhouse gas emissions the greater the magnitude of warming will occur. The 8-inch rise in average global sea level over the last century has intensified the impact of storm surge. $55 billion dollars were lost because of the weather and climate disasters in 2011.
What do we know about the connection between climate change and recent extreme weather events?
1) The U.S has just experienced the warmest 12-month period since record-keeping began in 1895.
2) More than 26000 new record temperature highs have been set in 2012 alone in the U.S.
"We believe there is an important human component explaining these record-breaking temperatures, and that´s the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere" - Thomas Karl (Director of NOAA´s)
3)Climate change has likely contributed to a significant increase in big forest fires.
4) 70 percent of the world´s farmland is increasing the level of greenhouse gases. This is causing more global challenges with higher evaporation rates and more sustained drought.
"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the most adaptable to change" - Charles Darwin
