The functionalist view on age is largely based on the writing of Talcott Parsons. Parsons states:

  • The different roles associated with age are vital for the smooth running of a society.
  • Childhood is the stage where we are socialised into the norms and values of society.
  • Boys and girls are taught their expected roles in later life, where girls will follow the housewife role and boys will follow the breadwinner role.

Pilcher (1995) added:

  • Children build a bridge between childhood and adulthood where they develop independence.
  • Youth on personal attractiveness is important to attract a marriage partner in order for them to shift loyalties from the parents to this partner and carry on the cycle.

Role Set is a group sharing similar characteristics of whom a particular set of roles are expected.

The disengagement theory suggests that the old are actively removing themselves from their previous roles so that the next generation can take over. They become isolated from their children who have now shiftedtheir loyalty to their marriage partner and their own children. Therefore becoming disengaged from society and on the sideline rather than contributing members.
