In his teens, he began working as the servant of Gerolamo Cardano.
He aided Cardano on the solutions of quadratic and cubic equations.
He was mainly responsible for the solutions to quintic equations.
After retiring from his teaching job at age 42, he returned to Bologna with his widowed sister, Maddalena.
Here he took up professorship of mathematics at the University of Bologna in 1565.
Shortly after that, he died of white arsenic poisoning. He was allegedly murdered by his greedy sister.
