MARY FIELDS

A WOMAN...

WAS...

MARY FIELDS...

She murdered?

Also known as "STAGECOACH MARY" or "BLACK MARY" was a Mail carrier, driving a mail route by stagecoach in Montana. She was also the FIRST WOMAN to work as a mail carrier in the U.S. and the second woman to work for the United States Postal Service! Born a slave in Tennessee, she was actually quite independent!

Birth: 1832 in Tennessee

Death: 1914 at the Columbus Hospital in Great Falls

No, Mary died of old age in 1914 at Columbus

Hospital in Great Falls, but she was buried outside

Cascade. Gary Cooper wrote an article for Ebony

in which he said: "Born a slave somewhere in

Tennessee, Mary lived to become one of the freest

souls ever to draw a breath, or a .38."

-a FEARLESS woman who wasn't afraid to shoot you

Death: 1914 in Great Falls

Birth: 1832 in Tennessee

You Would...

Not...

Who...

Probably know her at first, as the entire town did so.

DID SHE MARRY?

Exactly a poem...

"The Native Americans called Fields "White Crow" because "she acts like a white woman but has black skin." Local whites did not know what to make of her. One schoolgirl wrote an essay saying: "she drinks whiskey, and she swears, and she is a republican, which makes her a low, foul creature." In 1894, after several complaints and an incident with a disgruntled male subordinate that involved gun play, the bishop ordered her to leave the convent."

A Poem By Mary Fields

I am Mary Fields

People call me “Black Mary”

People call me “Stagecoach Mary”

I live in Cascade, Tennessee.

I am six feet tall.

I weigh over two hundred pounds.

A woman of the 19 century,

I do bold and exciting things.

In wear pants.

I smoke a big black cigar

I drink whiskey.

I carry a pistol.

I love adventure.

I travel the country,

Driving stagecoach,

Delivering the mail to towns.

strong, I fight through rainstorms.

Tough, I fight through snowstorms.

I risk hurricanes and tornadoes.

I am independent.

Nobody tells me what to do.

Nobody tells me where to go.

Nobody, she grew up an orphan, never married, and had no

children. She traveled north to Ohio, settled in Toledo, and

worked for the Catholic convent where she formed a strong

bond with "Mother Amadeus". The nuns were her family.

When the nuns moved to Montana and Mary found out about

Mother Amadeus' failing health, she went west to help her.

After nursing Mother Amadeus back to health, she decided to

stay and help build the St. Peter's mission school. She

protected the nuns.

When I’m delivering mail,

I like to build buildings.

I like to smoke in bars with men.

I like to be rough. I like to be rowdy.

I also like to be loving.

I like to be caring.

I like to babysit.

I like to plant flowers.

I like to give awy corsages and bouquet

I like being me, Mary Fields.

CREDIBLE SOURCE BECAUSE: Very well written yet I could still understand everything!

CREDIBLE SOURCE BECAUSE: Very short and simple, has been used as a main source for many other websites I've checked.

Fields was a black female in the American Wild West who was six feet tall, heavy, tough, short-tempered, two-fisted, powerful, and she carried a pair of six-shooters and an eight or ten-gauge shotgun. Fields loved the children of Cascade County and supported the local baseball team as their #1 fan. the nuns financed her in opening her own cafe. Mary's heart drove her business into the ground several times because she would feed the hungry (she was

extremely kind).

CREDIBLE BECAUSE: The website is a Montana based website, "The Montana Historical Society created this website as part of a commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of women’s suffrage in Montana."

CREDIBLE BECAUSE: It is the only site I found her "poem" on.
