My Book Talk.

Personal Connection

Stanley reminds me of my brother since they are both around the same age. Also, like Stanley, sometimes my brother gets accused of things that he didn't do and gets in trouble.

Summary

  • Stanley was worried about Zero.
  • One day, Mr. Sir was filling up everybody's water canteen using the water truck while they were digging holes . Stanley wanted to find Zero, so he went into the truck and drove away. Nobody went after him. They all knew he would come back soon, but if he didn't he would die in the desert.
  • The story begins with the author describing Camp Green Lake. (A camp for bad boys.)
  • Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of celebrity shoes. He was arrested and had to go to court.
  • The judge said that Stanley could either go to jail, or he could go to Camp Green Lake.
  • Stanley chose to go to Camp Green Lake.
  • When he arrived at camp, he met Mr. Sir. He had warned Stanley not to run away.
  • Mr. Pendanski was his counselor.
  • Stanley had to live in a tent with six other boys. One of the boys never spoke; they called him Zero.
  • Like the rest of the boys, Stanley had to dig a hole everyday that was as wide and as deep as the shovel.
  • Stanley was not the most fit kid, therefore he had a hard time trying to dig holes.
  • One day, he was writing a letter to his mom and Zero saw.
  • Zero told him about how he doesn't know how to read and write.
  • Since Zero liked to dig, he made a deal with Stanley. Stanley would teach Zero how to read and Zero would help Stanley dig his holes.
  • Zero and Stanley became close friends.
  • One day while digging holes, Mr. Pendanski was talking to Zero and made him mad. After hitting Mr. Pendanski with a shovel, Zero ran away.

Retelling the Story

Reflection

Setting: A dried up lake in Texas filled with holes.

Problem: Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of shoes that belong to a celebrity, and he has always believed that he has been cursed by his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.

  • I really enjoyed reading this book.

  • Although to me it was quite confusing, I like how the author tells three stories in the book to reveal something at the end.

  • The beginning of the book was a little bit boring but the end was more interesting.

The story is narrated by the author.

Recommendation

  • I recommend this book.
  • It's a great book, and it's very interesting.
  • Also, it's easy to read.
  • The ending is good, but it's kinda unexpected.
  • I kinda like how the author put three stories that led up to the ending. However, that was a tad confusing.
