Little Birds

by Octavio Paz

Little Birds

Eric's Translation

Noon

Light unblinking,

time empty of minutes,

a bird stopped short in air.

Later

Light flung down,

the pillars awake

and, without moving, dance.

Full Sun

The time is transparent:

even if the bird is invisible,

let us see the color of his song.

Eric Whitacre

Born in 1970. He has become one of the most

commissioned, published, and performed composer of

today. He assisted over 30 musical theatre

and operetta performances across America. He didn't

have an formal musical training before the age of 18,

and his first work was written at the age of 21. He

leads an event called the "Virtual Choir" where singers

submit YouTube videos singing a vocal part of one of

his scores and the videos are mixed together to

create an entire choir. Last year, he received

3,746 submissions from 73 different countries.

Octavio Paz

Born in 1914 in Mexico City. He began writing at

an early age. In 1937 he traveled to Valencia, Spain

to participate in a writing conference and upon

returning to Mexico, he co-created a journal entitled "Taller". In 1943 he came to America where he immersed himself in modern Anglo-American poetry. In 1981, Octavio won the Cervantes Award, which is the "most prestigious award in the Spanish-speaking world." His style of poetry is influenced by his belief that poetry is the secret religion of the modern age. "The revolution of the word is the revolution of the world. Both cannot exist without the revolution of the body: life as art, a return to the mythic lost unity of thought and body, man and nature, I and the other."
