THESIS

Unfortunately many Americans of all races often generalize that HBCU's are not equivalent to PWI's because of reasons such as: students who attend them are usually sheltered, less prepared for life after college and they create students who are not cultured. While most people discriminate against HBCU's because of personal prejudice, the true reason HBCU's have a hard time competing with it's counterparts is because they lack adequate government funding and high enrollment. Graduating from a historical black college or university does not limit your opportunities or lessen your chance of becoming just as successful as an individual who furthered their education at a predominantly white college or university. The success of an individual is defined by what they make of their education and how hard they are willing to work for their desired goals.

History behind HBCU's

There are 106 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States

Most HBCUs were established after the American Civil War.

HBCUs actually were "invented" in 1837, 26 years before the end of slavery. Richard Humphreys, a Quaker philanthropist, founded the Institute for Colored Youth to train free blacks to become teachers.

COUNTERARGUMENTS

I was drawn to this topic because.....

HBCU's create students who are less cultured because of the high density of one race.

Students receive a better education at a PWI because they have more money which means more to offer students.

You do not need to go to a HBCU to get the full "black" experience and attending a HBCU does not help build the uniqueness of an individual.

The challenges at PWI produce stronger people.

What is a PWI?

I attended a historically black university and i wanted to look into the differences between the two schools, while also addressing some key points such as government funding and negative stereotypes.

What is a HBCU?

History behind PWI's

Harvard University, founded in 1636 oldest university in the United States. First college in America

Older PWI's include William and Mary, Harvard, Yale, Penn,Columbia

Graduation Rates

Predominately White Institutions- On average, 60 percent of white students who start college have earned bachelor's degrees six years later. But only 40 percent of black students do.

HBCU's graduation rates-The average graduation rates of black students at an HBCU are 39% for private HBCUs vs. 31% for public HBCUs.

History of PWI

Do you think there is a division between students at PWI and students at HBCU?
