by Prachi Srivastava and Maria Santillana

When did the earliest oceans form?
What evidence supports each of these ideas?
The earliest oceans formed about 3.8 billion years ago.
1) the mantle contains 3-6 times more water than our oceans
2) outgassing continues today, earth's atmosphere has similar gases
How old are the ocean basins on Earth today?
How did the oceans become salty?
(Make a guess!)
-the water flowed off the land bringing dissolved minerals, this process is often referred to as chemical weathering
The oldest one recorded is 150 million years old!
