1897:

1873:

On March 4th, 1897 William McKinley became the president of the United States. He was the 25th president of the U.S. and he accomplished many important issues. One of them was that he wanted to fix Cuba situations but prevent the Spanish-American War. War did happen but they won and expanded their empire overseas. He was reelected in 1900 for another term and accomplished more, that helped the country. He died shortly after on September 14th, 1901 from being shot. The country still remembers him even today.

In 1873 Henry H. Garnett is a activist involved in the Spanish American War. He asks the U.S. to invade Cuba and try to stop the Spanish from enforcing slavery and to try to save the slaves. It wasn't officially gone until 1886.

May 1st, 1898:

On May 1st, 1898 the Battle of Manila Bay took place in the Philippines. The U.S., under command of George Dewy advanced on the Spanish camp, taking out ten of their fleets in 7 hours. Only 6 of the U.S. were wounded and 400 Spanish were killed from the attack. The Philippines became part of the U.S. at the end when the U.S. won the battle.

1898:

April 25th, 1898 war was declared on Spain from the U.S. What caused the war is that the U.S. wanted to expand their empire and help Cuba from Spanish rule. What really pushed it along is the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine that happened on February 15th, 1898. U.S. thought it was Spain and got very angry with them and started a war. The war ended 8 months later on December 10th, 1898, because the Treaty of Paris. "A splendid little war," said Theodore Roosevelt.

1823:

In the year 1823, President James Monroe created a U.S. foreign policy initiative that was called "Monroe Doctrine." The Monroe Doctrine made sure that Europe could not interfere in our decisions or make nations on the U.S. land. The U.S. could not interfere in future European conflicts either. This was made so that no country could influence any American territory. The U.S. created this to protect their progress in becoming a country of power.

May 1st, 1898 the Battle of San Juan Hill had started. How it happened was the Spanish fleet had docked in the Santiago harbor under command of Cervera, the U.S., under the command of Sampson and Schley blocked them. The Rough Riders, a volunteer cavalry took down their outer defenses and took the highest point in the island, San Juan Hill. It went on for 3 days until it ended and Cuba was finally the U.S.

The Ten Years War started October 10th, 1868 and was meant to get Cuba their independence and end Spanish Rule. The Cubans were longing for this since their government ruled by Spain was not going well with economics and other important aspects that were falling apart. During the decade Cuba really found who they were and was actually known for something. But at the end the Cubans loss and were in a very bad economic situation caused by the destruction from fighting. They had thier sugar plantations so they were able to get back on their feet.

On July 3rd, 1898 the Battle of Santiago had been going on for 3 days. The U.S. had taken the Spanish outer defenses along with San Juan Hill, the highest point in Cuba. After Spain had started retreating we fired at their ships out at sea until there were none left. The U.S. had won and 2 weeks later Spain surrendered and Cuba was theirs. This battle was the last battle ever fought in the War and ended the Spanish-American War for good.
