In 1774, the British passed the Quebec Act as a way to progress British control over the area. The Quebec Act made several roles. First of all, it extended the boundaries of Quebec into land that some American groups had already claimed. Second, the Act replaced the temporary government of Quebec with a more lasting government. A governor and his council would now control the region. Next, it allowed the people in Quebec to use French civil law in private matters as long as they used English law in public matters. Finally, the Act was made to give the Catholics in Quebec more religious freedom.
