Agencies of socialization - Religion

In conclusion, Religion plays significant role in socialization. It influences morality becoming a key component in people’s ideas of right and wrong. The influences of religion extends to many areas of our lives. For example participation in religious ceremonies not only teaches us beliefs about dress , manners and so on .

It teaches us right and wrong, for example: buddhism teaches us not to kill animals as animals are also like us , they have a soul so religion is an influencing factor in shaping our behaviour .

Decline in church attendance

  • Potentially shows that Britain is becoming more secular (non-religious)
  • However, just because there's a decline in people going to church over 70% of the population still say they believe in God

Islam

  • Fastest growing religion in the UK
  • Seems to have a bigger influence on its members than perhaps other religions

Parental Religiosity

Other ways in which people are socialised by religion

Positive views of their roles in socialisation

  • if a person's parents were religious when they were a child, they are likely to be religious when they grow up.
  • Children are socialized into religion by their parents and their peers and, as a result, they tend to stay in religions.
  • Alternatively, children raised in secular homes tend not to convert to religion.
  • Life stages and roles are connected to religious celebration
  • Places of worship provide a space for shared group experience
  • People learn the material culture of their religion.
  • Rituals and ceremonies of religion are seen as a force for social unity
  • According to Charlotte Butler's study (1995) shows that young women were developing more independent lifestyles to fit more into the British way of life, whilst maintaining their commitment to Islam.
  • Collective acts of worships (eg. marriages, baptisms and funerals) helps people bond over their shared values

Negative views of their roles in socialisation

  • Religion can often limit people's traditional beliefs and acceptance of things such as same-sex marriage.
  • Some people are exposed to these values even if they don't personally attend a place of worship.
