The early symptoms

• Behavior disorder (sleep disorder)
• Mood disorders
• Orthostatic hypotension
-Chronic and (slow) progressive movement disorder
-Malfunction and death of vital nerve cells in the brain
-Even though there is no cure (actually), there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage its symptoms.
Causes
-The causes remain unknown
-Combination of genetic and environmental factors.
-There is a 2-4 % risk for people of 60 years old, compared with 1-2% in the general population. (Get PD)
Dopamine : a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination.
PD : Contraction of "Parkinson Disease".
Substantia Nigra : It is a brain structure located in the midbrain that plays an important role in movement. (NIGRA -> DARK PART OF THE BRAIN)
Orthostatic hypotension : low blood pressure when standing up.
PARKINSON IN NUMBERS
-1,000,000 Americans live with PD (Same # of people Montana State)
-Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD each year (this number does not reflect the cases that go undetected).
-An estimated 7 to 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease.
-Men are 1 and 1/2 times more likely to have PD than women.
-PD "costs" $100,000 dollars per patient each year (medication-surgery).
PD primarily affects neurons in the Substantia Nigra. Some of these dying neurons produce dopamine. As PD progresses, the amount of dopamine produced decreases, leaving a person unable to control movement normally.
