The History of Herters

What happened

Yee Yee

Modern Day Products

Unfortunately in 1981 Herters went bankrupt after Cabelas bought their foam decoy factory and patent and soon the company. The Herters name is still used on many Cabelas products today.

Ever since Cabelas bought Herters they have kept using their name on different ammunition products, and other hunting products.

Deer Hunting Products

Minibikes

Herterts wasn't best known for it but they had a very big selection for deer hunting. They made their own broadheads, bows, deer calls, blinds and treestands.

Herters strived to make anything for their customers. Because of the popular Husky snowmobile they made they decided to make a vehicle for summer activities. So they made a popular minibike called the Hudson Bay.

The Impact

Snowmobiles

Herters Outdoor Goods affected the retail stores of the modern day U.S. in no way we could imagine. He made it so when you walked in to his store you would have every hunting and fishing product known to man under that roof. This concept inspired Cabelas and even Wal-Mart.

What Herters had to do being one of the only outdoor surplus stores around they had to supply their customers with recreational vehicles. So they made a snowmobile which actually was very popular in its time.

Duck Hunting Products

Herters was sometimes best known for their duck hunting products and how they revolutionized the waterfowl world. They designed 10+ different models of duck boats and their Styrofoam decoy factory was later bought by Cabelas.

The Herters Husky

Burlap Wrapped Decoys

Herters was one of the first to introduce the burlap wrapped decoy. This was a revolutionary breakthrough for it expanded the life of decoys by almost 15+ years.

George Leonard Herter

George Herter was born May 24, 1911 in Waseca Minnesota and he was the founder of Herters outdoor goods, and author of Bull Cook and Authentic Historical Recipes and Practices series (published in three volumes)

Herters Outdoor Goods

Duck hunting and recreational boats

In 1937 George took his fathers dry goods business and turned it into his own mail order outdoor goods store. He sold hunting and fishing items through a catalog and later he opened retail stores which inspired Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops.

Herters was sometimes best known for their variety of watercrafts. From their ever popular Duck-Goose model to their stylish fishing boat the Cutter.
