Background Info About Cotton

Cotton is used for many things including the cloths we wear today.

Raw cotton has seeds stuck all in the cotton fibers.

Who is Eli Whitney?

(December 8, 1764 - January 8, 1825)

Eli Whitney was an American inventor Born in Massachusetts.

His most famous invention was the cotton gin made in 1793

The cotton gin was a key invention in the industrial revolution

How did it work?

  • The raw cotton was placed in the top of the machine
  • People turned the crank that turned a wheel, pushing cotton through the machine
  • It was pushed through "wired teeth" that sifted out the seeds.
  • The seeds and cotton were then separated

Where did his ideas spread?

Whitney's invention first became known all over the south.

Cottage industry or putting out system was merchants providing and giving raw cotton to peasant family's who separated it, spun it into thread and then wove the thread into cloths at their home.

They passed it to artisans to dye the cloth.
