Examples of Community Institutions
Overall Oakville has a very average amount of institutional land use. These facilities come with positive and negitive consequences toward the society, residents, and natural environment as we have explained earlier. Institutions are becoming more and more of a necessity in Oakville which is why there are more being built, now if others are added to the local society you will know the good and bad that could come with them.
-Built in 1950, the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital will be replaced with the construction of a new state of the art hospital in the North West area of Oakville, scheduled to be finished in December of 2015, while the older Oakville Trafalgar Hospital will be repurposed to serve Central Oakville
-In 1921, the first fire department in Oakville was built, followed by two more in 1962, and another in 1967. Today there are 8 fire departments, the oldest one being built in 1967.
-In 2010 a new 70,000-sq.-ft. facility, which had a construction budget of $14.1 million, Police Department was built in Oakville with a land parcel of 4.3 acres, adding to the existing 1 in Bronte. “As policing evolved and changed over the years, so did our facility needs. Eventually, the former Oakville station was stretched beyond its capacity and became functionally outdated” Police Officer Crowell stated as he referred to the older White Oaks Blvd. police station which opened in 1967. The Town is in the process of acquiring the 1229 White Oaks Blvd. police station from the Region and is looking to use the land for either additional parking or office space for Town Hall.

- In 2009 policies for educational institutions for oakville changed
Elementary and high schools are to be located near public parks where possible, central to the units of population served, possible future expansion, recreation facilities and build able ground
Schools must have parking spaces,drop-off zones, and outdoor play areas
Commercial and industrial construction should be spatially separated from educational facilities
-When a great amount of educational, community, or recreational institutions are built in Oakville it puts a strain on taxpayers. This is because institutions rely on government funds/taxes from the town residents, and if there are too many institutions the tax money has to be spread between institutions, giving less money to each of them. In some cases, taxes can increase because of the shortage of money to the majority of institutions (specifically, schools and hospitals) so the facility can still function. Currently Oakville’s, overall tax rate has increased over the years, contributing to the new schools, and hospitals that have been built recently.
-If the institution shuts down because of minimal funding, the area becomes abandoned and often brings in crime such as trespassing, vandalism and can be destructive to the community around it. Halton Police statistics show that in 2013 there has been almost 3,000 property crimes committed and charged, 500 of which was mischief. Today, there are 35 abandoned locations in Oakville, 3 of which are churches, and one health care centre; both have been vandalized and demolished.

Examples of Institutional Land Use
- Institutional land uses are defined as land uses developed which serve a community's social educational, health, cultural, and recreational needs
-They may include government owned or maybe privately owned and operated facilities
-They are land uses which form an important part of a community and must be carefully planned and located to serve the needs of surrounding residents
-Institutional uses can also be defined by their scale and impact serving the broader community (the entire town), this includes larger facilities such as colleges or hospitals
-Many smaller scale facilities (e.g. elementary schools, libraries) are integrated directly into the residential community
-Institutional uses serving employment areas must also be carefully considered and placed due to potential conflicts with industry
Institutions in the Educational Field Offer the Necessary Education for Higher-class Jobs
-For Ontario, 86.5% of University graduates are employed after 6 months following their their graduation. Specifically at Sheridan College in Oakville, 88.2% of Sheridan graduates are employed within six months of graduation. In 2009/2010, canadian dropouts employed full time were working almost one hour more per week than high school graduates who were not in school, yet they were earning $70 less per week, on average. Across Canada, 2200 medical school applicants are admitted each year. In Canada, five in six medical school graduates find a job in their fields.
