Different uses of camera angles and shots are also important in thrillers due to the fact that different shots and angles alone can help to build tension and create the atmosphere needed in a thriller. High camera angles can be used to show a character from a birds eye view and it could be used to make the identity of a certain character a mystery (for example: a killer). This can also be done by filming in a location with low level lighting and use shadows to help build tension and mystery in a thriller film.
High level camera angles in this scene is almost a point of view shot of the killer about to kill the man and is done to show how vulnerable he is. Camera angles can also be done to show status in a scene.
The use of sound in thrillers is also crucial, for example you cant have someone being killed in a scene and happy music playing in the background, it doesn't match the action so it seems out of place. Therefore sound and music in thrillers is crucial. You need to use sound/music to have a gradual build up when building tension so speed and volume is also important. Non-diagetic sound is good as it means the audience is aware of something that the character in the thriller isn't aware of. This makes the viewer intrigued and would want to watch on.
There are many different codes and conventions used in a thriller film, this uses different kinds of lighting, sounds, camera angles and mise en scene.
The mise en scene in thrillers really help to show the audience of the genre of the film. The mise en scene for a thriller film usually contains props such as: guns, drugs, and crime so people can clearly see that its a thriller. It is also most likely in some sort of secluded area or abandoned as this stereotypically is used in thrillers and therefore is good to show the audience that the film is a thriller.
In insidious chapter 2 they use the mise en scene of dark lighting and, abandoned building to show the atmosphere in the scene.
Evaluation
The use of lighting in thriller films is crucial to make the audience know the genre of a film, in this case a thriller. The levels of lighting in a thriller are usually low level lighting to create an eery / spooky vibe and get the sense of a thriller film. If you use high level lighting in a thriller than the viewer will not get the sense of a thriller and the experience would not be the same.
An example of low level lighting being used in a thriller is in the purge where they are locked in the house and the hostage scene is taking place. This is a good use of lighting as it creates mystery and a scary atmosphere in the house and portrays emotion of fright.
By doing this task we found out what codes and conventions we had to use in our opening sequence as we saw what was used in famous thriller films and therefore could use these in our work to fit the criteria of a thriller film, including: Lighting, Camera angles and Mise en scene. From doing this task I found out what codes and conventions are needed in order to make an effective thriller film. We managed to use a lot of codes and conventions of thriller films in our opening sequence including, low level lighting, and non diagetic sound.
