A nationwide study shows that the highschool graduation rates for inner city youth is only 53% compared to 71% for suburban youth.
I would like to change this in Detroit and every inner city in the United States and abroad.
My passion is education, and I have decided to homeschool my children, because they were failed by the public school system.
We know that this is not the way out of poverty, but its a reality for most non highschool grads.
In Detroit only a small percentage (20%) of highschool graduates are prepared for college. There are only 2 highschools in the city of Detoit where 50% of graduates are college ready.
but what about their counterparts?
College readiness is defined as a 18 in English 22 in math, 21 in reading and 24 in science on the ACT exam
Growing up in a big city
There's poverty all around.
Learning to survive and navigate is a real challenge.
I learned early that the only real way out of poverty is through education; more specifically, higher education.
But what if your schooling has not properly prepared you for a higher education? Then what?
This is my story, I grew up in the inner city, I went to pretty descent schools from K-8, my middle school was considered a magnet school and I loved it. For highschool I attended a small Parochial school and graduated with a 3.0 G.P.A.
Here's the problem, even though I was accepted to the college of my choice; I only scored a 14 on the ACT and I ended up having to take remedial classes my first semester of college. As you know these do not count towards a degree and you still have to pay for them.
