Definition

Transformational Leadership is the process by which a leader inspires others to be more with a real and optimistic approach to challenges, creates change where change is needed, and is able to communicate a vision of purpose and success.

Honesty

  • Open about past failures- both SpaceX and Tesla almost went bankrupt in 2008 (Heath, 2015)
  • Can admit there might more than enough features in the Tesla cars
  • Admits his first idea for the Hyperloop was not feasible.

Life Accomplishments

  • Started Paypal in March of 2000, booted out as CEO in September of 2000, continued to invest and made $250 million from sale of company in October of 2002
  • Started SpaceX in June 2002, goal of creating re-usable rockets to colonize Mars
  • First investor of SolarCity
  • Invested in Tesla, goal of making fully electric cars
  • Married twice, has twin boys and triplet boys

Optimism

  • Not until 4th launch did the SpaceX rocket succeed
  • Has a clear vision of what he imagines for the future
  • Has used money made from one venture to fund the next
  • Hopes to die on Mars

Flexibility

  • Entrepreneur- started at least four companies (Zip2, X.com, PayPal, and SpaceX)
  • Company leader for two companies- SpaceX and Tesla
  • Engineer and Designer
  • Each company has a different focus and goals, but each is related to Musk's personal life goals
