The Myth of Apep and Bastet

Origin

This myth originated in Ancient Egypt around 1000 B.C.. This myth helps explain the process of the sun going across the sky and why there are dark and cloudy days.

The Goddess and

the Snake

Bastet was worshipped as the goddess of fire, cats, of the home and pregnant women.

Apophis represented powers of dissolution, darkness and non-being.

Apophis

Apophis, also known as Apep, lives in the underworld. He is the enemy of the sun god Re, and was the very embodiment of the powers of dissolution, darkness and non-being. Each night Re would travel through the underworld and Apophis would try to keep him from arising with the sun.

Bastet

Story of Bastet

Theme

Bastet is the Daughter of Ra. It was said that she would accompany Ra on his journeys through the underworld after making his way through the sky. She would protect her father and the sun from Apep who would try to swallow the sun. Eventually she killed Apophis.

She expresses admirable characteristics like being responsible for someting that isnt her responsibility. She doesn't have to travel with her dad and protect him but she does because she is honorable.

Her story explains how family is number one priority and you should always protect family at all costs.

When your family and everything that

you stand for is threatened, you will

be willing to give your life to save it.

Motivation

Roles

Bast was motivated to do what she did to help protect her father and the people of the earth because without the sun, they would die and Apophis would gain so much power by swalling the sun that it would threaten the well being of the earth.

Women: Bastet was a woman and she is the one who is saves the sun and Ra.

Men: The man is the evil figure in the myth becasue Apophis is male.

Epiphany

She realizes that nothing is as important as family and protecting what you love and what you believe in.
