  • Also called the limacon Pascal. Comes from the Latin

limax meaning snail or slug.

  • When thinking of cardiods remember that cardio refers

to the heart. Cardiods, therefore, are graphed in the shape of a heart or apple.

Limacon with inner loop

Use this table to plot the points:

r=a+bcos(theta)

b=3

a= 1

Equation

What is a Cardiod?

Background and History

A heart shaped limacon. It is defined as resembles point on the radius (or circle) that rolls around the fixed radius of the same circle.

Basically just a heart shaped limacon.

What is a Limaçon?

A plane curve whose equation in polar coordinates

has one of the forms ρr=a+/-bcos(theta)

or r=a+/-bsin(theta)

and which reduces to a cardioid when a = b

*The ratio a to b is going to change the shape of the graph

Types of Limacons

How to graph it :

Limacons w/ inner loop: if a/b <1

Cardiod (heart shaped): if a/b=1

Dimpled: if 1<a/b<2

Convex: if a/b >= 2
