Nick attempts to hold a large funeral for Gatsby, but all of his supposed friends do not respond. Only Nick and a few others attend his funeral.

Nick sees Tom on the street as he is moving out. Tom says that Gatsby deserved death. Nick realizes that Tom and Daisy are just rich people who only care for themselves.

On the way home, Tom, Nick and Jordan arrive on the scene of Mrs. Wilson dead from being hit by a car. Daisy was driving but Gatsby will take the blame.

During lunch at Tom and Daisy's, Tom discovers the love between Gatsby and Daisy and accuses Gatsby of being a bootlegger. They stop on the way to lunch at the Wilsons and learn that Wilson found out his wife is cheating .

Gatsby asks Nick urgently to invite Daisy over so he can see her. When Nick agrees, Gatsby insists on paying him; Nick kindly declines.

Daisy comes over to Nick's and at first Gatsby is extremely awkward and nervous, but after Nick leaves them alone they seem to be extremely close as if they had never left each other.

Gangsters and Racketeering

Gatsby is again accused of racketeering, but this time by Tom as an insult when fighting over Daisy. It seems more and more true as the book goes on. Gatsby even fired all of his servants to prevent rumors.

Almost all racketeering was founded on the circulation of alcohol which Gatsby has lots of

Nick passes under the eye doctor's sign. He feels as if he is being watched.

Nick, Tom, and Daisy meet the Wilsons in the Valley of the Ashes

Nick walks outside with Jordan, a girl he met, and sits down with a stranger. They begin conversing and discover that they served in the same division. The stranger then reveals himself as Gatsby. He then makes a speech and closes the party.

Nick arrives at Gatsby's party feeling out of place. There is lots of drinking going on. Gatsby is nowhere to be seen and the guests start rumors about his occupation/whereabouts.

Nick talks about Gatsby's past and where he came from. Not the rumors or what Gatsby has said, how it actually occurred.

Nick talks to Gatsby about Daisy and how he can't win her back and instructs him to leave Long Island. Gatsby's love is too strong so he stays for her.

Nick tells the story of when he went to lunch with Gatsby in the city. They talked and all Gatsby talked about was highly improbable stories of his past that seemed to be lies.

After lunch they speed through the city in his Rolls Royce to meet Meyer Wolfsheim who supposedly fixed the 1919 World Series

Wilson looks for revenge for Myrtle's death. He assumes that her lover was the one who hit her. He tracked down Gatsby's car and shot Gatsby and then himself.

After a party at Gatsby's that was less fun than in the past, Nick tries to tell Gatsby that he can't recreate his past with Daisy and Gatsby is upset.

This picture is one of the many trenches dug on the battlefields of WWI. Gatsby and Nick crawled through one just like it.

Prohibition

Illegal Activities in the 20s

When the threesome visited the Valley of the Ashes, it really showed the darker side to the city that seemed to be carefree. Everyone was rich and happy until reality sets in in the valley. This isn't the last example of how hollow the American Dream really is.

Cars at this time were still new and to own one required quite a bit of wealth, let alone a Rolls Royce. This further shows just how wealthy Gatsby is.

It was The Reds v The White Sox and 8 players from the White Sox were paid to lose the game. Gatsby claimes the man who organized this event, known as the Black Box Scandal, was Meyer Wolfsheim.

Prohibition was still in effect so the fact that there was free alcohol at the party was a big deal. Most organized crime revolved around alcohol during this time which raises questions about Gatsby.

Almost all organized crime during the 20s was focused on the production and distribution of alcohol. The rumors started at the party about Gatsby often included illegal activities which would make sense due to the amount of alcohol at his party.

This depicts people in line for a homeless shelter in front of a billboard about the American Dream - a perfect example of the irony of it

Al Capone's gang was the most notorious organized crime group in history, making hundreds of millions of dollars from mainly alcohol distribution

The police's main task in this age was to find drinkers and trace it back to its source

Women's Suffrage

Event 2

With the passing of the 19th Amendment, women were given the right to vote. This started a new group of women who were proud to be women and went against the status quo of being extremely feminine. Jordan is one of those girls.

Nick buys his West Egg house next to the Gatsby Mansion and goes to the Buchanans for dinner where he meets Tom who is a rich and moderately racist person. He also meets Jordan Baker who is a more masculine pro female golfer.

Nick spots Gatsby looking over the lake for a currently unknown reason

Race Relations

The Roaring 20s

Tom is seen reading a "scientific" book about how blacks are inferior. Back in the 20s there was extreme racism because they were only 100 years away from full on slavery.

In the book, it goes into detail about the differences between East And West Egg. West Egg, where Gatsby lives, is where the new rich people are and there were a lot. This is one of the reasons it was called the Roaring 20s.
