What are some examples of structural adaptations?

Why do goats climb trees, and how are they able to do it???

What are some examples of behavioral adaptations?

Read the article,

"Tree Climbing Goats of Morocco"

What adaptation do goats have & how does it help them to survive in their environment?

Information Collection:

On a piece of notebook paper, make 3 sections:

  • HOW

  • WHY

  • CONNECTION TO SCIENCE

There are 2 types of adaptations:

  • Structural Adaptations
  • Behavioral Adaptations

Throughout class, you will gather info in each of these 3 sections.

When an organism behaves in a way that helps them to survive, that's an adaptation.

A structural adaptation is part of the organism.

Check out some examples of these characteristics that help some organisms survive in their environment.

  • traveling in packs or groups
  • migrating to find food
  • hibernation
  • fur color
  • strong jaws
  • webbed feet
  • scales
  • thin beaks

Structural

Behavioral

Things an organism does or actions the organism takes that helps it survive

characteristics on the inside or the outside of the plant or animal.

(Like how it looks on the outside or how it works on the inside)

ADAPTATIONS

Mimicry

Camouflage

Migration

mimicry: when an unharmful animal "mimics" or looks likes a dangerous animal

camouflage: when a plant or animal blends in with its environment

migration: when an animal moves from one place

to another.

Reasons Animals Migrate:

  • To escape extreme heat or extreme cold
  • To find food
  • To reproduce

An adaptation is defined as:

any characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment.

This bug looks like a stick which helps it blend in with its environment

How can a cactus survive in the hot, dry dessert?

How can polar bears live in extremely cold temperatures?

How do plants & animals survive in their habitats?

Think about & jot down an answer to

the following questions:

Plants & Animals have unique features that allow them to survive & reproduce in their environment.

These unique features are called adaptations.
