What is a Wave?

What is a Water Wave?

What is a Wave Pool?

Thank you!

Wave Pools

  • A wave is the passing of energy through a medium.
  • There are many different types of wave. Ie. Sound waves, infared waves and ocean waves to breifly name a few.

Wave pools are swimming pools which artificially mimic the waves of the ocean for recreational purposes. Wave pools are commonly found as feature of most water parks.

The objective of wave pools is to replicate waves that would be seen in a natural body of water such as the ocean. To understand the physics of wave pools one must first know more about the properties of water waves.

What causes water waves?

  • Also called oscillations.
  • For an oscillation to occur there must be a returning force that brings a wave to an equilbrium.
  • Waves are built by small continuous oscillations.
  • The energy of a wave is directly propotional to the square of its height.
  • Created by wind sliding over the surface of water.
  • This creates small ripples along the surface which begin to interfere with each other at higher speeds, the waves grow in size.
  • When waves have enough height to mix with air flow the wind transfers kinetic energy to the wave generating larger, faster waves.
  • Wind direction determines the size of waves.

How Wave Pools Work

Wave Pool Design

Video time!

  • Wave pools are designed as artificial beaches.
  • Waves break the "shore" of the pool, uilizing the pulling property of waves.

  • Different types of wave generating systems exist.
  • Most sophisticated system uses pressurized chambers to create waves.
