NATURE VS. NURTURE
What is it?
How do we know which is which?
Studies about identical twins have allowed scientists to develop theories as to which traits are absolutely determined by genetics, and which are affected by the environment we live in. Twins separated at birth are put into two different environments, and studied throughout the course of their lives. The outcome is two people who are genetically the same and may have certain similarities in personality, but have two different sets of likes/dislikes, attitudes, and lifestyles thanks to their separate environments. The similarities are what scientists use to determine traits that are more genetic vs. acquired.
So, which is more important?
Neither! Both nature and nurture are equally important in making up your life story and your personality traits. While some aspects of your environment may override your genetic make-up, you genes in turn can override some aspects of your environment.
For Example...
A person may have the genetic tendency to develop psychosis. However, when raised in a positive environment, the chances of the individual developing psychosis are much lower than those of an individual raised in a negative environment.
Inversely, a person's eye color, hair color, or skin color (determined by genetics), won't be changed by the environment in which they live. The amount of "nurture" will not change these specific features.
