Main Characters

Quotes From Raven's Gate

Strange Things

Background

The main characters in Raven's Gate are Matt, a fourteen year old boy, Richard, a journalist for the newspaper in Lesser Malling, and Mrs. Deverill, Matt's caretaker.

Map: England. The green area is Yorkshire, where Lesser Malling is located.

"We live in a world with so many dangers that we have to be careful whom we trust." I think that this quote is a good example of the theme of Raven's Gate because in the beginning of the book, Matt trusts a lot of people and doesn't really worry about what he says to people. However, as he gets wiser through the book, he starts trusting less people and becoming more aware of the people that he talks to.

"You are meant to be here. There are no coincidences. It's all happening the way it was meant to be." This quote also symbolizes Matt's journey throughout the book. In Raven's Gate, Matt learns that his whole future has already been planned out for him and nothing that he does can change it.

Matt soon realizes that Lesser Malling is no ordinary town, and he is in extreme danger. But will he be able to escape? Just as things seem like they can't get any worse, Matt meets Richard, a journalist, and together they make a plan. However, they are still at great risk... can they do it?

Raven's Gate is the story of Matt, a teenage boy who gets in to some trouble with law. But what he doesn't realize is that this crime will change his life forever. Raven's Gate is adventure and fiction. Raven's Gate is written in third person point of view.

Mrs. Deverill

The L.E.A.F. Project

The L.E.A.F. Project stands for Liberty and Education Achieved through Fostering. The goal of the L.E.A.F. Project is to send young criminals to live in homes where they can be taught discipline and hopefully be sent back in to the world on their own once they are 18. Matt is selected for this program. He is sent to live with an old lady named Mrs. Deverill on her farm in the miniscule village of Lesser Malling. Matt immediately dislikes Mrs. Deverill because she makes him work long hours on the farm and doesn't feed him enough.

Setting & Writer's Craft

Why You Should Read It

Raven's Gate is set in modern day times. It is based in a tiny fictional village in England called Lesser Malling. Matt goes to live with Mrs. Deverill on her farm near Lesser Malling. The author, Anthony Horowitz, writes the book so that you get an eerie feeling while reading it. He makes you feel like you are part of the story, and you are living through the same challenges as Matt. For instance, the book shows you the perspectives of multiple people so that you know the truth about things even when the characters don't. At one point in the book, Matt is being tricked, but he thinks that Mrs. Deverill is telling him the truth. However, because the reader sees multiple perspectives, you know that it is a trick. Anthony Horowitz has a very unique style of writing because he likes to use lots of action scenes so that there is never a boring moment in the book. He also put a lot of cliff hangers in the book, making you want to read more.

If you like action and adventure mixed with fantasy, then Raven's Gate is a great book for you. It is one of the most unique stories that you will ever read. In Raven's Gate, Anthony Horowitz combines witty humor, edge-of-your-seat action, and just a hint of dark magic that will leave you to question world as we know it. For people that like cliff hangers, don't worry. Raven's Gate has many cliff hangers, making sure that you just want to keep reading.

Legal Trouble

How The Story Begins

Right as they are about to get away, the boys get caught with their stolen video games by a security guard. Much to Matt's surprise, instead of confessing, Kelvin takes a pocketknife and stabs the guard. However, the police were already there to arrest them. Kelvin blames everything on Matt, and the boys are both taken to the station. After spending one night at the station, Matt is evaluated by a detective and a psychiatrist. Soon the police decide that Matt would not do well in jail, and he is quickly selected for a program for young law offenders, called the L.E.A.F. Project.

Matt has never had what you could call a stable home life. Ever since his parents died when he was young, he has been in and out of foster homes. Currently he resides with his aunt, Gwenda Davis, in a run down neighborhood in London. However, Gwenda has no idea how to take care of a rambunctious fifteen year old boy like Matt. Matt despises Gwenda and her boyfriend, and they don't enjoy his company either. He starts making friends with the neighborhood bully, Kelvin. The story begins when Matt and Kelvin are developing a plan to break in to a warehouse and steal some video games.

Theme

In Raven's Gate, one of the main ideas is that not all things are as they seem at first. Another theme is to never give up. In the book, Matt is trying to find out what "Raven's Gate" means. However, it is not easy. It takes him a very long time and multiple failed attempts. He could have given up, but instead he perseveres and his hard work pays off.
