Jem and Atticus
Mrs. Dubose is an old, cantankerous woman who always shouts obscenities at Jem and Scout when they pass by. Jem does not like this but Atticus tells him to mind his temper, and so forgive her because she is old and sick. She also has a morphine addiction.
Jem originally didn't think much of his dad, until he witnessed him shoot Tim Johnson, the old dog with rabies, nice, quick, and clean. Jem also hears about how talented Atticus is in shooting. PG. 96
Jem lives in a poor family and relies on his sister and friends for entertainment. Because of this Scout is quite the tomboy and can be rather rude and unladylike.
One day, Mrs. Dubose makes a racial statement about Atticus that brings Jem's temper to an overflowing boil. Jem then uses his temper to destroy the flowers she grew.
Jem (Jeremy Finch) is one of the main characters in "To Kill a Mockingbird". He is the brother of Scout, the narrator and main protagonist. PG. 3
Jem gets in trouble and Atticus gives him a scolding. Jem's punishment is to then stay and read with Mrs. Dubose everyday for one month. Mrs. Dubose eventually dies, but she leaves Jem a white camellia as a aftermath gift, and Jem realizes what Atticus was saying about her not being that bad is true.
Atticus, at first, believes that it was Jem who killed bob. Atticus wants Heck to publicize this, staying in his way of never keeping anything covered. Heck claims that there's nothing to cover. Jem is to lay down and rest after his arm is broken. An investigator, Heck Tate, pronounces Bob Ewell dead. In a turn of events, Scout proves the it was Boo Radley who saved Scout and Jem's life, as well as killed Bob Ewell.
One night Jem and Scout are returning from a play at Scout's school. They are alone in the dark...
In the dark, Jem and Scout are attacked by a mysterious man. In the rough, Jem gets his arm broken and Scout remains unharmed. The man who attacked, however is eventually found dead. This man turns out to be Bob Ewell, seeking revenge on Atticus for making him look a fool in public.
Jem realizes that his father isn't what he originally thought. He wondered why his dad didn't show his talent. This is when Atticus gives Jem life lessons about being humble and not bragging. At first Jem doesn't understand, but he eventually does and realizes that Atticus is really smart and he gains a lot of respect for him. Scout, on the other hand, doesn't understand at all. PG. 98-99
Jem often gets in trouble with neighbors and his father, Atticus. He constantly attempts to mischievous ideas involving Arthur "Boo" Radley, who earns his "Boo" status for being scary looking and never coming out of his home. Atticus does scold him, but he more so gives advice than tries to make Jem feel bad. He does the same with Scout.
Jem is ten years old in the beginning, four years older than Scout. At the end he ends up being 13. PG. 3
