This system was used to rent out plots of land to people. It was like their own community.

The King

The seigneury itself

The Habitants

The plots of land were built along the St. Lawrence River. Each typically had a manor house, a church and the houses.

The King gave plots of land to noblemen. He owned all of it.

The settlers of the land had to pay rent and some of their harvest, as well as build their own homes and tend to the land.

The Noblemen's Job

Land ownership in the 21st Century

Now, people own their own houses and pay bills instead.

Also, in apartments you have to pay rent to the landlord.

A typical seigneury

Noblemen became seigneurs after they accepted their role. They had to do lots before the seigneury could move on to Phase Three.
