Standard 5 - Using Content Knowledge to Build Meaningful Curriculum

The Purpose of Standards

Standard 6 - Becoming a Professional

Key Elements of Standard 5:

  • knowing the "what's" and "why's" of all academic areas within the appropriate developmental stages so as to develop a curriculum which is challenging yet age appropriate
  • knowledge of standards, academic resources, evaluations, past experiences, and future student expectations
  • using a community of professionals and educational based research to provide the best learning environment possible for early learners

Key elements of Standard 4:

  • understanding that relationships with the children and families they serve are a reflection of respectful interactions and effective teaching practices
  • having a sound understanding of developmentally appropriate practices to guide teaching and lessons
  • knowing how to adjust learning to reach the individual needs of each child in the learning environment

The National Association for the Education of Young Children developed a set of standards for early childhood educators to use as a framework for best practices. These standards are the cornerstone for success in an early childhood environment and provide a path for educators as they guide students and families through their journey in early childhood education.

Key Elements of Standard 6:

  • involving oneself in the field of early childhood education as a professional
  • knowing the ethical guidelines of being in this profession and allowing these standards to be present in all practices
  • being an advocate for children and their families
  • using educated and informed reflections throughout all aspects of one's career

Standard 2 - Building Family and Community Relationships

Standard 1 - Promoting Child Development and Learning

Standard 3 - Observing, Documenting, and Assessing to Support Young Children and Families

In conclusion...

Key Elements of Standard 1:

  • understanding the basic needs and developmental stages of the young child
  • using this knowledge to provide a safe, healthy, and challenging environment for early learners
  • provide an environment that is respectful of culture, language, ability, family, and community
  • understanding the importance of early childhood intervention and building a strong foundation in the early years of learning

Key Elements of Standard 2:

  • having knowledge of the community which children are a part of and respecting the diverse nature of the families in the community
  • understanding the value of family contributions and involvement to the learning environment and children's success
  • respecting the differences between the cultures and family characteristics of students vs. that of the teacher

Key Elements of Standard 3:

  • knowledge and use of appropriate assessments
  • knowing how to use assessment data to further individual success and close learning gaps
  • using daily observations and documentation to guide assessment and student goal setting
  • using the network of other professionals and family members to provide for effective assessments and interventions

The standards presented here are a shared vision of early childhood professionals and the NAEYC. They are meant to serve as a guidepost for creating valuable learning environments for your children. Early childhood settings will be unique in appearance and personal to the learning community however the atmosphere of learning will remain consistent when these standards are used appropriately in the environment.
