Going to New York City
On the first page, Holden talks about his childhood he says "IF YOU REALLY want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know where I was born and, what lousy childhood was like and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me,...(1)" When Holden says this quote he sounds as if he was a bother and negative by saying he had a lousy childhood and how his parents were occupied before they had him. Holden also opens up about his older brother D.B on page 1 and 2. Holden says "Now he's out in Hollywood,D.B, being a prostitute.(2)" When Holden call his brother a prostitute he means sell out. At the beginning of the book right away you can notice Holden's attitude towards people and family.
When Holden is talking about Allie it sounds like it is his first time being honest. " He was teriffically intelligent" "He was the nicest" and "He never got mad at anybody(38)" You can tell how Holden is honest because he is being positive.
We meet Ackley and Stradlater in Chapter 3. Holden describes Ackley by saying "He was one of these very, very tall,round-shouldered guys-he was about six four-with lousy teeth...he had a lot of pimples...he had a terrible personality. He was sort of a nasty guy."(19) Overall, Holden did not like Ackley, belittled him and thought very negative of him. You could tell this about Holden when he thinks of him as nasty and a terrible personality.
When Holden goes to New York City he is depressed. When he leaves he is also frustrated with people at Penecy. For instance, when Holden is packing he says "One thing about packing depressed me a little.(51)" Holden also said "I was sort of crying.I don't know why" Holden crying could siginify depression. You can tell is frustrated when he yelled "Sleep tight,ya morons(52)" in the hallway to everyone in the dorms.
However when we meet Stradlater
Holden thinks a little more positive of him. When Holden describes Stradlater he says "He was at least a pretty friendly guy,Stradlater. It was a partly phony kind of friendly..."(26) Holden also says "...he thought he had a damn good build. He did, too.I have to admit it."(26)Holden state of mind is honestly respectful he is respecting Stradlater and is honest by saying "It was partly phony.".

In chapter 2,is the first time Holden asks about ducks. "I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was where did the ducks go.(13)" . The ducks migrating and not knowing where they are going except to the south could represent Holden's life. For example,he doesn't know where he is going but he is going somewhere. Holden's state of mind is random because he is thinking about ducks when Old Spencer and him were talking about "Atlantic Monthly". Holden also sounds attention seeking because you learn where the birds go during winter at a young age and he somewhat answers his own question by thinking "Or if they just flew away.(13)"
When Holden talks about the red hunting hat, it represents how confident he becomes when he puts the hat on. He says what he wants ans what wants to do when he has the hat on. "Sleep tight you morons!"(52) also he says " this is a people shooting hat." (22) It also foreshadows what he is going to do in the future.
Because Stradlater and Jane going on a date, Holden gets mad, jealous and also feels betrayed by Stradlater. Holden feels betrayed by Stradlater because Holden feels as if Stradlater "gave her the time". Holden wants to preserve Jane's innocence as much as he can, but he feels because of Stradlater going out with her, its blocking his way to protect her. "Boy, was I getting nervous. I had a feeling something had gone funny."(42) Holden asks Stradlater, "Give her the time in Ed Banky's car?... My voice was shaking something awful." (43)
