Way to remember.

How is it used?

I remember what a paradox is by thinking about Doctor Who. There are a lot of paradoxes, such as many times where there is a younger and an older version of the same person existing at the same time. This is of course impossible, and is often referred to as a paradox. One can remember all of this by thinking about PARA as in a pair of the same people.

One uses a paradox to add emphasis and to illustrate a opinion or statement.

Examples

Paradox

No one uses this staircase; it's too crowded.

No one likes this song anymore; it's too popular.

A paradox is a sentence that directly contradicts itself, yet still makes since.

Example

Beautiful tyrant! Fiend angelical!

Dove-feathered raven, wolvish ravening-lamb!

Despised substance of divinest show.

-Romeo and Juliet

Act 3, Scene 2.

How does it work?

Examples

"This meal is terribly good."

One uses an Oxymoron to emphasize and draw attention to a point.

Modern History

Oxymoron

An oxymoron is when two words that are seemingly opposite are used together to make a point.

Way to remember

Oxymoron and Paradox

One can remember what an oxymoron is by thinking, only a (oxy) moron would put two words that mean opposite things together.
