Until the 1920’s, all agriculture was generally organic. Farmers used natural means to feed the soil and to control pests It was not until the Second World War that farming methods changed dramatically. It was when research on chemicals designed as nerve gas showed they were also capable of killing insects. In 1939, Paul Muller developed DDT, the first of a new class of insecticides chlorinated hydrocarbons to counter the pest problems. Since then, a new way of farming emerged, where the use of chemicals was heavily promoted. This led to the outright dismissal of organic farming methods
The modern organic movement began at the same time as industrialized agriculture. It began in Europe around the 1920s, when a group of farmers and consumers sought alternatives to the industrialization of agriculture. In Britain, the organic movement had gathered pace in the 1940’s.The ‘be natural’ approach of the 1960s and 1970s, the growing consumer interest in health and nutrition, the growth of the green movement, the focus on conservation and environmental issues stimulated the development of the organic market and encouraged farmers to adopt organic methods. The organic movement had sprung directly from the customers’ demand as they became sick of the health hazards associated with the use of chemicals in food and household products.
Products offered only through health food stores in the 1970s and 1980s spread to the corners of supermarkets in the 1990s. Today, organic products occupy prime shelf space in the big chain supermarkets.Mass production is based on the principles of specialization and division of labour as first described by Adam Smith in “The Wealth of Nationwide early businesses that used such methods were able to take workers directly out of agricultural labor on the land and on to the factory floor. No significant retraining was required.s” in 1776, and as first practiced in places like Eli Whitney's gun factory in America in the 1790s.

Personal opinion(Daniel)
In my personal opinion, I say yes to organic food. I say this not from what I have read or the info provided from the other presentations but I say yes based on the fact that this is a life change I have made. I have seen my weight drop my mood improve and even feel more energized. From going off a small family income and only eating food mass produced whether it was box or not, and then changing my diet eating food that was either grown in greenhouse or eggs/meat farmed naturally by my boyfriend's grandfather I can say it had a huge impact, my allergies have almost all gone away not to mention, digestive problems as well. Since i have this experience i can truly say YES to organic food being better for the individual.
In my opinion i think mass produced food is the way to go because it is usually cheaper than organic food and i feel that it is more convenient since the nutritional values do not differ much from Organic food.
The Niagra falls fruit belt is located on the Niagara Peninsula, extends along the south shore of Lake Ontario which is Canada's most important area for the production of grapes, peaches, pears, plums and cherries, for example Peaches grow best in warm, temperate climates. The Niagara Fruit Belt produces 90% of Ontario’s tender fruit crop.
The Niagara Fruit Belt is about 65 kilometres, mainly below the Niagara Escarpment along the south shore of Lake Ontario, extending from Hamilton to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is one of the richest fruit-producing areas in Canada.
A food cooperative or food co-op is a food distribution outlet organized as a cooperative. Food cooperatives are usually consumers' cooperatives where the decisions regarding the production and distribution of its food are chosen by its members.ontario natural food co-op is the main organiser of all natural food co-ops carefully selecting their vendors/sellers.
The manufacture of goods in large quantities by machinery and by use of techniques such as the assembly line and division of labor. Some examples include many boxed food ie’ icecream, pizza pockets, etc.. also meats, fish, fruits and vegetables.
is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation.
According to a study Organic food is just as nutritious as the mass produced goods. The quality of the product is no different compared to mass produced good. Organic food is more expensive than mass produced products that are sold at typical supermarkets. Organic goods also take longer to produce for example, smaller farms take longer time to grow crops in contrast to mass producing farms.Organic foods are produced without the use of pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and other hazardous inputs.
In Canada shopping at a metro some may see a signifigant price gap. When buying strawberries prices for regular mass produced strawberries ranged from 3.99 at a regular price to 1.50-2.99 on sale where as organic strawberries range from 6.99-7.99 at a regular price and 4.99-6.99 on sale, the organic strawberries tend to be smaller which of course is why most will gravitate towards larger and cheaper for the more bang for your buck.
