The Election

Republicans

Adams lost the election 65 to 73 in the electoral college.

Although the republicans won, there was a tie within the party. 73 Republicans voted for both Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. They then had to look to the House of Representatives to decide who would become president. Burr refused to pull out of the race even though he was aware he was chosen to be Vice President by the party.

Taking over 6 days The House failed to choose either man with 35 ballots. On the 36th ballot Jefferson was chosen to become President and Burr Vice Prsident

The Republicans were in full support of Thomas Jefferson. They were successful in harnessing bad views on the Federalist party. They also had good campaigns in activating the support of new voters and swing states. Republicans raised great political awareness.

The Republicans were presented as a party of traditional agrarian purity, liberty, and favoring individual rights of states, and "government rigorously frugal and simple" As Jefferson said.

Election of 1800

After the Election

The election of 1800 was a battle between the two political parties; Federalists and Republicans. The Federalists supported John Adams in re-election, while the Republicans supported Thomas Jeferson for President and Aaron Burr for Vice President

Jefferson described his election as the "Revolution of 1800" because he considered it "as real a revolution in the principles as that of 1776 was in its form." Jefferson, along with the republicans saw them selves as saviors of the nation freeing it from the tyranny of the Federalists who were leading the nation towards monarchy. Jefferson thought that he was saving the Democratic thoughts in America but it is clear that the country was not going to become a monarch. Jefferson later found out that the president is swamped with problems whether he is a Federalist or Republican.

Federalists

Adams began to create more of a moderate stance in response to criticism, which distanced him from "High Federalist", led by Alexander Hamilton. Adams decided to care more about the nation than the political parties. Extreme Federalists withdrew there support of Adams during the election, because they thought he was tarnishing Federalist ideas.

Although, Federalists tried to create negative campaign about Jefferson for being a religious free thinker, using the slogan "GOD- AND A RELIGIOUS PRESIDENT" or "JEFFERSON- AND NO GOD"

Burr V. Hamilton

There were always tight tensions between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. When Hamilton lobbied the congress and got three men to change there votes, it caused Burr to lose presidency. This was a major cause for them wanting to duel. Along with many other conflicts, the two decided to duel. On July 11, 1804 Burr and Hamilton met on the dueling grounds of Weehawken, New Jersey. Hamilton was mortally injured and Burr was wanted for murder.
