WHO IS DAVID FLORIDA?
- One of Canada's prime pioneers in space research
- Was director of the Canadian National Space Telecommunications Laboratory, manager of the International Satellites for Ionosphere Studies (ISIS) program and manager of the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) or HERMES program
- The laboratory was named after David Florida in honour of his achievements
- Thermal performance of the spacecraft is tested
- Makes sure the spacecraft can handle intense temperatures
Thermal Balance Testing
WHEN, WHERE & WHY THIS LABORATORY WAS BUILT
Thermal Vacuum Testing
- typically occurs in a space simulation chamber
-Chambers such as TV1, TV2, TV3 etc.
- used to test parts of spacecrafts
- ensures that a spacecraft can last the journey in space

International Affairs
- September 29th, 1972
- West end of Ottawa, in Shirley's Bay
- It is operated CSA, also known as the Canadian Space Agency.
- The government supplies the laboratory with specialized rooms and equipment.
- Ability to perform thermal balance.
- Able to handle hot temperatures.
- Able to perform numerous task and experiments.

- In the David Florida Laboratory, these rooms are used to construct satellites and other space hardware.
TWO CLASS 100,000 CLEAN ROOMS
- Previously tested satellites for Brazil, Indonesia and the European Space Agency
- Olympus
- Other offshore programs include: Indostar, Optus C, BSAT 2A, 2B, 3C and CMBstar in addition to the many subsystems from other international satellites
ANECHOIC CHAMBER
- chambers that reduce the amount of reflection or reverberation of the various types of waves, such as radio frequency and microwaves

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS LABORATORY ?
The DFL is capable of:
- Thermal vacuum testing
- Vibration testing
- Thermal balance testing
- Modal testing
EXAMPLES OF CHAMBERS AND EQUIPMENT
- To check the safety of equipment
- To use numerous amount of tests to see the safety on sending the equipment to space
- Anechoic chambers
- Space simulation chambers
- Shielded rooms and radio frequency equipment
- Two Class 100, 000 clean rooms
Types of Tests
SPACE SIMULATION CHAMBER
- There are three space simulation chambers
- largest chamber is 7 x 10m deep with an area of 22 x 35 feet
- largest chambers are for performing thermal vacuum & thermal balance testing
- small chamber is used for performing outgassing tests

- tests spacecraft parts to see if they can withstand the force of exiting/entering earth's atmosphere
Vibration Testing
SHIELDED ROOMS &
RADIO FREQUENCY EQUIPMENT
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - how well a device/system is able to work within a electromagnetic environment without causing electromagnetic interruptions that effect the operation of other electrical products in that environment.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/E/EMC.html
- Type of vibration testing
- Tests the natural frequencies, natural mass and natural shape of the spacecraft in space
- The Government
- Communication Research center and the National Research Council of Canada’s Acoustic Test Facility for stimulating launch environmental characteristics
- Operational infrastructure to ensure activities run smoothly in the lab
Modal Testing
