Why?

The economy of Rome was successful at war, which kept the slaves in order and the cheap grain coming to feed the common class.

Did it fall?

The Empire had always depended on slave labor as a cheap source of work to produce wealth. The final years of the Empire were faced with a large reduction in population which caused a great economic downfall. A halt of growth in land, a gradual fall of population, loss of education and cultural degradation were big economic problems also.
