Martial Law

"Martial law is the imposition of military rule by military authorities over designated regions on an emergency basis."

  • Sep 1st, 2005: 6,500 National Guard troops arrive in New Orleans.
  • "State of Emergency" had been declared by mayor= martial law imposed on city.
  • In the emergency, civil liberties were curtailed because they interfered with physical security.

THE ISSUE

SO WHAT IS "SECURITY?"

  • Security is a feeling of safety and/or comfort that we feel in situations that we feel comfortable in.

How do we comprehend security based on our reason and emotion?

False Senses of Security

Our Comprehension of security

Security to the individual vs. the security of the society/group.

  • Some people will believe that they are secure when in reality, they're not.
  • This actually makes one question how valid ones security even is if its so hard to identify whether someone is secure or not. This questions the whole idea of security.
  • People can feel secure when they feel comfortable about their surroundings
  • This occurs when people know they're both physically safe as well as emotionally safe
  • This feeling of security differs from person to person, feeling a false sense of security is actually common and more likely to occur
  • Something that may make one person secure may not make a group of people or a society secure.
  • Ex) Herd mentality and economics (2008 financial collapse), prisoner's dilemma.
  • If a society is not secure, it could also make the individual less secure. If an individual is not secure, it can hurt them but generally won't hurt the society as much.

Factors influencing false senses of security

  • One could have a physical disability that could make them feel insecure or more secure, such as:

•PPD (Paranoid Personality disorder)

•Paranoid schizophrenia

Past experiences can influence the perception of security

•Schema Theory: New experiences are to be evaluated by the learner by means of analyzing past experiences.

  • Both entities use reason to find out what provides the most security for themselves.
  • Privacy can be a part of security and it can also not be a part of security.

Different securities

Cons of Privacy:

  • Privacy increases possibility of crime and terrorism
  • Taking away privacy can add to one's physical security.

Physical Security: measures that are designed to deny unauthorized access to facilities, equipment and resources, and to protect personnel and property from damage or harm

Pros of Privacy

  • Popular figures such as actors often lack privacy and sometimes are even subject to some physical or emotional harm.
  • This is, however, sometimes desired by the celebrities as they may enjoy the publicity.
  • This means that some celebrities use their emotion when dealing with their privacy.
  • The feeling of being secure of one's physical body or personal information ( ex. Wearing kevlar, the police, food security etc).
  • Some think privacy is a basic human right
  • Privacy allows democracy to flourish and keeps a nation free.
  • Being spied on makes some feel safer; others feel more violated

Emotional Security: is the measure of stability of an individual's emotional/mental state.

  • The feeling of comfort and security. (ex. With a group of friends, family, knowing you wont be judged, confidence in your abilities.)
  • This also applies to other civil liberties
  • Reason&emotion both play a part in determining the interpretation of the security of having/not having civil liberties

CONCLUSION

How do we comprehend security based on our reason and emotion?

We comprehend security through our use of reason and emotion in combination of one another. As security not only refers to our physical embodiment's safety but our emotional well-being as well, we need to feel a sense of safety for our physical well-being as well as feeling comfortable with our surroundings in order to feel truly safe. It is, however, a matter of our perception of a situation that truly determines our reaction to the event and whether we use reason or emotion to interpret a situation.

Daniel Perry's Emotional and Physical Securities were violated, thus he committed suicide in response.

Perry was talking to someone he thought was a girl his age through Skype.

His interactions with the person through Skype were taped & used as blackmail.

I'm just a sucker

with no self-esteem

For famous people, like celebrities, all of their personal information can easily be obtained.

Making a sense of physical security almost impossible to uphold.

However, social media has also made it possible for anyone to acquire information on most given persons.
