Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus. She has two brother named Eteocles and polynices. The two brothers fought against each other. One for the Thebes and another raised army against Thebes. Both of them died in the battle.

After Oedipus's death, Antigone's uncle, Creon became the king. As Polynies betrayed with his own state, Creon forbid everyone to do his burial ceremony.

Antigone was not selfish, she had an altruistic personality. She broke the law, to properly bury her brother. Instead of knowing that she will be punished, she buried her brother.

She was also the most sensible and courageous out of all her siblings.

In this situation, Antigone tried to fulfill both the state and religious laws, but she had an clear and pure believe on religion. She believed, state laws are made for the people, people are not for the laws.

As per Greek, it requires to bury the dead body properly; otherwise the family members will not meet together after their death. Antigone strongly and deeply valued the religious laws more than the state law. She went against the king, and took the risk to bury her brother.

Unfortunately, Creon heard the news that Antigone disobeyed his order, so he puts her in the cave, but Antigone's courage never went down. She didn't let Creon win, she hung herself in the cave. By doing so she proved that she was right in her religious believe. She sake herself for God.

Altruistic Personality of Antigone:

Conflicts between State Laws & Religious Laws

Because of Creon's ego and selfishness, he lived like a dead person, and although Antigone died, she succeed to established the true belief of religion.

There was several reasons that Creon gave punishment to Antigone:

  • He couldn't imagine someone will defy his laws
  • He wasn't even expecting a women can do it
  • He wanted to see fear of Antigone's eyes, but he did not see that fear.

Creon lost his everything except his royal crown.

  • His son Heamon, who killed himself with his beloved Antigone.
  • Creon lost his wife.
  • He lost his hope.
