Cherokee Indians Before and After Colonization

Hiott Hames

  • Cherokee women grew crops and gathered berries and nuts. Corn was the most important food.

  • Cherokee men were the hunters and fishers. They only hunted what they needed to feed the tribe and the families. No part of the animal was ever wasted.

  • Rivers were a common spot to find the Cherokee tribes. This gave easy access for fishing and traveling to the other villages by canoe.

Clothing

  • Women wore tops and skirts made from deerskin; moccasins for shoes; jewelry made of shells and clay beads.

  • Men wore loin clothes made of deerskin in the summer; In the winter, they wore leggings, shirts, or robes also made of deerskin.

  • At times, they painted or tattooed their bodies, usually for ritual ceremonies or for war.

Way of life

  • The Cherokee lived in different villages. Each village had two chiefs.
  • White Chief: Led in peaceful times
  • Red Chief: Led in times of war or battle

  • Each village also had a Village Council. The council made important decisions for the tribe.

  • Villages were made up of about 400 people and 30-60 homes. They traded with and learned from each other.

  • Every tribe respected the earth.

Beginning of Colonization

  • In the late 1400's, the first colonists began arriving in America. The colonists believed America had free land with rich soil that would be perfect for farming.

  • At first the Cherokee welcomed the European settlers. They believed in sharing the land and resources. They taught them how to grow corn, grains, cotton, and tobacco. The settlers saw this as a way to get rich.

  • The settlers thought the Native Americans were scary because they were different and strange.

Trading Began

  • Trading was important to both groups. They traded things such as:
  • Food
  • Horses
  • Deer skins
  • Animal furs
  • Tools
  • Weapons

Positive changes for Cherokee

  • Europeans brought different kinds of animals, including pigs, cattle, horses, goats, and sheep.

  • Colonists also introduced metal tools and weapons.

  • Native Americans adapted an education system that was brought over by the settlers.

Negative for Cherokee

  • The colonists brought new diseases to America killing a large number of Native Americans

  • Conflicts between the settlers and the Native Americans over differences regarding the earth's resources. Led to violence and bloodshed.

  • Eventually the land hungry settlers destroyed Cherokee villages and forced them to relocate to reservations.

Things Fall Apart v. Cherokee Indians

Compare

Contrast

  • White men brought their religion and began converting Cherokee and Umuofian's.

  • Both thought the white men was harmless, even silly in the beginning.

  • Both lost their cultural traditions from the changes of colonization.
  • Things Fall Apart - Umuofian's kept their land but culture and customs changed. Cherokee were forced from their land to reservations.

  • Things Fall Apart - Villagers began to benefit financially from the crops they were able to sell and trade. Cherokee only wanted enough to survive - didn't believe in excess resources or owning land.

Reflection

Colonialism is when one country comes into another country acquiring control by occupying it with settlers or colonists and exploiting it economically. Until we studied Things Fall Apart, I did not really think about all of the negative aspects that go along with colonialism. The country that is being colonized is usually poor and behind in modern times. Unfortunately, the people of that country usually end up losing a lot of their cultural traditions. The people sometimes become economically dependent on the colonizing country which leads to conflicts and death. New diseases are brought and spread to the area also. On the other hand, better technology is brought to the country which improves healthcare practices and teaches more efficient ways to do things. The community usually adapts to modern education systems and become more “civilized.” Because of the trading and exporting of resources, the area becomes more prosperous. There are both good and bad that comes from the changes of colonialism.
