Trench Foot

Trench Fever

Why is This Significant?

  • caused by exposure to unsanitary, moist conditions
  • takes up from 3-6 months to fully recover
  • a problem for soldiers because it postponed them from partaking in war.
  • Diseases during this era (1914-1919) were significant to the U.S. involvement because little medication and medical knowledge was known
  • caused by lice, everyone had body lice
  • symptoms included high fever, rash, migraines, and joint pain
  • not a severe illness, most recover within 2 months
  • treated with medicine named chlortetracycline for permanent relief of symptoms, still carry disease
  • 800,000 soldiers infected
