Why Did Ptolemy Need a Table of Chords?
Ptolemy's Table of Chords
Ptolemy needed a table of chords, the basic equivalent to a table of sines, to allow him to find the measure of lengths and sides in triangles given the measures of the other lengths and sides. This table would allow Ptolemy to further extend his astronomical studies, and to create models for the motion of the sun and the planets.
