Lack of Water Resources in India

The Issue

The Risk

The lack of available clean water disrupts the peace and prosperity of India. The pollution of major water sources in India affects the people and ecosystem. Those below the poverty line are unable to afford clean drinking water. As the population of India increases, water supplies decrease. It is important that we don't allow pollution of water to continue, if we do then we risk the spread of water pollution.

Pollution of the Ganga River

We have a limited supply of water on this earth. Just because we currently don't have to worry about clean water, doesn't mean we should wait until we do. We already have a head start on ending water pollution. There are currently organizations that raise money to clean water. Just by supporting these organizations we can make a difference.

The Ganga River provides water for millions that live in India, however the river is heavily polluted and unsafe. The river is used by locals for bathing and drinking as well as disposal of garbage and excrements. People are also known to dump bodies of deceased animals (including humans). Adding on to that, industries will dump waste into the river making it toxic and unsafe to bathe in.

According to Shannyn Snyder, " global water scarcity is expected to become a leading cause of national political conflict in the future" (Water In Crisis - India). Polluted water is also affecting India economically. The Health cost of polluted waters is estimated to have cost India nearly 3% of the countries GDP. Approximately 70% of earth is covered in water, however only about 2.5% is safe to drink. That number will drop if water pollution is not stopped. As the human population increases, the importance of clean water will increase. Right now we can stop and prevent water pollution, we can't afford to wait until the water crisis has reached us.

Donations

Creating more effient disposal systems will also prevent water pollution. In countires like India, where religious cerimonies and offerings play a big role in water pollution, we can replace non-degradable plastics with biodegradable objects like paper. Because Industrial waste also plays a big role in water pollution, increase standards on disposal of this waste would help end water pollution.
