Bronze figure on the mantle:

  • It can't be picked up which symbolizes that the characters can't leave the room
  • Can't see your reflection in it
  • Eyes on the figure are always watching
  • Represents absurdity because it's placed there for no specific purpose.

No reflections can be seen without the help from another being.

GARCIN

-Red Couch=lust

  • Brought Estelle to her couch
  • died in bed with someone

-The green couch represents hope

- Garcin represents being for others because he gave his couch to Estelle

-Envy

Estelle

  • Yellow Couch= vanity
  • She is always the one looking for approval from others
  • -Being-for-others
  • The set as a whole, is very simplistic.
  • There is not much that can be used for its actual purpose, which can be linked with the Existentialist idea of absurdity.
  • The lack of objects in the room makes the 'torturing' of each other seemingly inevitable.

Being for others- Sartre states that many relationships are created BY people's attractions not TO others people attraction, not to another person, but rather how that person makes them feel about themselves by how they look at them.

Why aren't there any windows?

WHY ISN'T THERE A MIRROR?

  • Existentialist idea of nothingness
  • Whats the real point of living if you cannot see yourself?
  • Are you even there?
  • No time passes
  • No connection to outside world
  • No exit
  • Nothingness

-no world around you, does your life have any meaning?

-you have no effect on the world.

  • Estelle and Garcin are a reflection of how other people see them and not how they actually are.
  • Existentialist idea of encrustation.
  • Encrustaion: when an individual feels compelled to look/act/talk a certain way based on a set of complicated representations that exist about how that person really is.

THANK YOU !

'Garcin:'No mirrors.I notice. No windows. Only to be expected. And nothing breakable. (Sartre)
