Barnes and Noble gives Fablehaven a 5 star review.

I give this book a complete 5 stars because of its amazing use of descriptive language, its suspenseful plot and edge of your seat adventure. Be sure to check out the second book in the series if you are interested in it! I recommend this book for ages 11 and up.

Brandon Mull, the author of Fablehaven, is renowned for his great works in fantasy. Fablehaven was his debut novel and received much praise. The greatest inspiration for his stories are J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and J. K. Rowling. He has also written the Five Kingdoms series, and is a New York Times bestselling author. He is 40 years old and currently lives in Alpine, Utah. Interestingly, his house is directly perched on a mountain above a prison. Ironic, right? He says he gets his many fantasy ideas from his mountainside home and the view he has as well.

Literary Terms

"Before her lay a pristine pond, with a small, verdant island at the center. Flowering vines wound around the latticework of the impressive promenade. Elegant swans glided in the water." (Mull 54) This is an example of descriptive language.

"Out soared a dazzling fairy with wings like shimmering veils of gold." (Mull 101) This is an example of a simile.

"And I thought my mind was as muddy as a chicken, Grandma muttered." (Mull 333) This is an example of a simile as well.

The Many Types of Fantasy Animals

Themes in the Story

Theme 1: "A man with a brave tongue should support his words with courageous actions." (Mull 39) This quote is said by the witch of the forest, Muriel Taggert. She tells Seth this because he thinks that she is trying to trick him by asking him inside the shack.

Theme 2: Be aware of what you don't know. The children were ignorant about the evil beings in the forest, and on a particular night, it could have cost them their lives. That is why it is vital to steer clear of danger and be aware of the unknown in Fablehaven.

There are many different magical beings that live in the Fablehaven sanctuary. Some of which are: Fairies, imps, naiads, witches, satyrs, and ogres. These beings are disguised as animals; an example being a fairy as a hummingbird or butterfly. Because they are in disguise, you cannot see their true form. However, if you drink a special milk, you will be able to see into this magical realm and all of the wonders in it!

As the children will later find out, this forest is a sanctuary for mystical creatures like fairies, naiads, and other beings. Their Grandfather is the guardian and caretaker of this forest. This beautiful sanctuary is called, Fablehaven, and all you have to do to see this magnificent place is take the first steps into the woods, and drink the milk.

Characters

Kendra is a 14 year old girl who is smart, honest, and brave. She goes into the woods and finds a secret journal explaining what the Fablehaven sanctuary is all about. When she is in peril, she stays calm and finds a way to help! She is truly a great person to have as a sister!

Seth is Kendra's younger brother. He is adventurous, but naive. He first discovers the woods and the witch of the forest, and gets his family into trouble. However, in the end, he is able to make it better.

Muriel Taggert is the witch of the forest, confined to an old vine covered shack as a prison for over 150 years. She is an intelligent, and darkly cunning woman who is very devious. She can grant wishes only if you release a knot, which signifies her prison time.

Grandpa Sorenson is the caretaker and guardian of the Fablehaven sanctuary. Day by day he works, producing the special milk and helping the magical creatures adapt to the woods. He is a very knowledgeable man, and will help and care for his grandchildren at any time. He is kind, and very caring.
