Don River

Watershed Issues

By: Sabrina and Sarah

Water Pollution

- The number one cause is storm water and snow melt.

Pollutants carried into the river include:

  • Oil
  • Grease
  • Dirt
  • Bacteria from animal waste
  • Chemical pesticides
  • Litter

- Increased erosion + the combination of dirt from streets and yards makes the brown colour of the river water.

- Heavy rain storms + sewers + treatment plants overflow cause untreated sanitary sewage to flow directly into the river.

Due to some causes that have affected the Don River in a negative way, the river had become a polluted mess in the 1960's.

Urbanization

- Between 1950's - 1960's Construction on the Don Valley Parkway started, which meant the river had to be re-routed.

- All the paved surfaces prevents the storm water from going into the soil so it goes into the river.

- This caused erosion and flooding during storms.

- Development reduced the nature in the watershed.

Floods

On May 29th, 2013, drivers on the DVP were stuck in the impassible flood of water and mud that came from the rain storm and the Don River.

The

Don River

affects us!

Fuel Spills

- The water won't be 100% clean even after cleaning the river.

- The oil will eventually will end up in our lakes and drinking water, affecting our health.

Affect on us

- Due to the chemicals in the fuel this will cause the animals to get sick or for some, die.
