THE FUTURE

New Tube Trains

Proposed Plan

Night Tube

  • 250 trains for the Piccadilly, Waterloo & City, Bakerloo, and Central lines rolling out by 2020
  • Walk-through carriages to ease extra demand at peak times
  • Air-cooled carriages for comfort and health
  • More capacity with faster, more frequent service
  • Improved accessibility with step-free access at platform level
  • The addition of the night tube also adds accessibility to the public transport system in and around London.
  • The night tube is set to run a 24 hour service on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • This is similar to the undergrounds of New York, Berlin, Sydney, and Barcelona
  • The night tube would work in conjunction with the already running night buses, increasing accessibility of the public transport.
  • “A higher densities of people can facilitate more sustainable public transport, walking, and cycling, making it more efficient to provide services and promote urban vitality.” -- The Guardian

THE SOLUTION

Expanding Population

Ask yourself: Do you like the tube?

What about it do you like?

Could it have improvements?

Climate Control

  • The UK population is due to rise by about 10 million people, making the accommodations necessary.
  • The rise in population is “largely due to the direct impact of international migration and the indirect impact of immigration.”
  • With more people than ever using the tube for daily transportation, all of the tubes are being overhauled.
  • Due to the overhauls, trains are running faster, reducing the average journey time by nearly 2 minutes per journey.
  • The overhaul of the trains increases the accessibility of the tube and keep the city running smoothly.

London is known for its metro system, or the "tube", and its convenience to get around the city. The tube, although convenient, has a lot of flaws and could use a lot of improvements.

  • The only means of cooling the carriages is through air circulation
  • 2016: over 150 new air conditioned trains on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines
  • Why don't the trains have air conditioning already?
  • No space for air conditioning unity in most of the older tunnels
  • There is no where for the heat to go
  • “It is incredibly difficult, we have never introduced air conditioning on the underground because that would mean displacing heat elsewhere, into the tunnels and stations”

"As London's population grows faster than forecast, the case for stable and sustained investment in London's transport network has never been stronger." - Steve Allen, TfL's managing director of finance

Crossrail -- Expanding the Tube

  • TFL is increasing accessibility of public transportation, especially in the tub system by introducing 66 new 300 meter long trains that will run on the new Elizabeth line.
  • Each train would carry up to 1500 people and include walk through carriages, allowing for more access for people with disabilities.
  • The Elizabeth line will be fully open by December 2019

Accessibility: Poor and/or Disabled Persons

Bus Use

  • Buses are still cheapest and most easily accessible transportation option
  • Step-free access on every bus
  • More routes throughout London (with Night buses more readily available)
  • Introduction of single decker buses and Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles into central London
  • Reduce diesel particulates and fuel exhaust in London air
  • Use cleanest buses on dirtiest routes
  • Buses are the most cost-effective public transport option - will they make the tube obsolete?

  • 67 tube stations are step-free
  • More ticket machines that work faster
  • Plans to add more elevator access to tube stations
  • Added step-free access at Blackfriars, Farringdon, Greenford, Green Park and Paddington (Hammersmith & City) stations
  • New air-conditioned trains are now running on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines
  • Buses are wheelchair accessible and have a standard fare

THE CONTEXT

Safety

Tube = Global City?

  • Sexual assault
  • Sanitation on the tube

- rush hour and overcrowding

- crime, security

  • London has the highest foreign born population of any city in the world
  • There are 50 non-indigenous communities with a population of more than 10,000
  • Over 300 languages are spoken throughout the city
  • London is the foremost global city, with more foreign companies and currency exchanges than Tokyo and New York.
  • More than 50% of the world's population now live in cities
  • Urban growth has economic, social, and environmental effects
