Plymouth, Mrs. Ray
Pilgrims
What problems result from landing so far north, out of the jurisdiction of the Virginia Company?
The separatists chose to make an agreement with the Virginia Company and headed to the New World. The group of 102 men, women, and children, looking for religious freedom, traveled with 28 crew members. At this point the small group of separatist became known as pilgrims.
We have learned about the colonies of Roanoke and Jamestown. Each of these colonies were established to generate a profit. The colony at Plymouth was settled for a very different reason!
- Would you have signed it?
- Why is it still significant today?
The Mayflower Compact
Separatists
- Protestants who wanted to "separate" from the Church of England.
The group was supposed to take two ships but one had a leak. All 130 people piled onto a single ship...
The Mayflower
"In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, e&. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In Witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of
November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord,
King James of England, France and Ireland,
the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth.
Anno Domini, 1620."
The separatists chose to leave England and move to the Netherlands so they would be able to worship without fear of prison or execution. Unfortunately, their children began to pick up the customs and language of the Dutch and lose their "Englishness". The New World offered an opportunity to establish a new community where they could teach their children English ways and worship God as they saw fit.
As we mentioned, the group was supposed to land in Virginia and follow the rules established by the Virginia Company. Unfortunately, they were WAY off course and ended up in what is now Massachusetts...
