Ebenezer Zane laid claim to 3 sq miles along theHocking river(lancaster) also muskingam(Zanesville) and Scioto(Chillicothe) rivers. He petitioned congress in 1796 to open a trail(trace) pretty much beginning and ending points on the Ohio river. The trail really was only a path that he and sons cleared big enough for a packhorse to get thru. The land was payment for his effort.
