Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs most often in children who participate in sports.

It is an inflammatory disease that causes a painful lump located under the knee cap.

Boys ages 13 to 14

Girls ages 11 to 12

Osgood-Schlatter disease affects as many as 1 in 5 adolescent athletes.

Treatment and Prognosis

  • Rest and decreasing activity
  • Ice
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Formal treatment is not usually needed
  • Symptoms usually disappear after the child's bones stop growing
