Area after the Western nation arrived

Economic~ The economy is a mixture of village agriculture and handcrafts, an industrial sector based largely on oil, support services, and a government characterized by budget problems and over staffing. Oil has supplanted forestry as the mainstay of the economy providing a major share of government revenues and exports. Rapid oil rising revenues enabled the government to finance large-scale development with GDP 5% annually.

Political~ Ruled by Belgium from 1908- 1960. It was established by the Belgian parliament to replace the previous privately owned Congo. Rulers were used as agents tp collect taxes and recruit labor; uncooperative rulers were deposed.

Social~ Men were sent off into the forests, and its women tied up as hostages and were constantly raped until their husbands return wit enough wild rubber to help thier wives from the brutal soldiers.

This rule was seldom observed as soldiers kept shooting Africans and than later chopping off human hands to provide their aiblis

Economically~ Rich mineral control is a big conflict. Poverty is a a major issue. 70 percent of the people are below the poverty level. GDP per capital among the lowest in the world

Politically~ Joseph Kabla has been the president since January of 2001.

Socially~ Sexual violence is a huge issue as well as discrimination against women.

The Colonizer and the Colonized

~The Colonizer of Congo was King Leopold the 2nd

~ The Colonized- Belgian Congo

Colonized area before Western nation.

Political~ Congo was ruled by kings

influenced by the portuguese.

Social~ Slavery was a fact of life in the kingdom. Most slaves were a result of war or conflict between nations.

Economic~ Took advantage of trading opportunities to gain access to the copper mines to gain south, and traded crafts and tools from each other.

How did they gain their independence?

How & why did the Western nation change the colonized area ? What did the Western nation gain from the Colonized area?

~ It took may years to gain their independence. They held a conference in Brussels, they wanted their independence quickly. So they were granted just that.

~ No violent actions were taken between 1908- 1960. But almost immediately after Congos independence, a series pf civil wars broke out and the Soviet union and the US supported opposing sides.

Leopold ll created an organization called the " International African Association". This would improve the life of native Africans by converting them to Christianity. Also by ending the slave trade and introducing educational systems.

Why~ He believed that these colonies would greatly enhance Belgium's wealth.

Leopold sent Henry Morton Stanley to the region, Stanley made treaties with tribes. He also set up military posts and forced muslim slave traders out of the region. He got millions of km of Central African lad for Belgium.
