Populism was considered to be the movement that helped farmers contribute to legislation and to increase their political power.

Successes and Failures of Progressivism

Failures:

  • The Civil Service Reform Act- An attempt to end the "Spoil system" and get rid of corrupt political machines.
  • Corporations grew smaller.

Successes:

  • Laws were passed to protect the public’s health and welfare (The Meat Inspection Act)
  • The number of hours that children were allowed work were limited, and education improved
  • Anti-trust legislation was passed to prohibit monopolies
  • Laws were passed to protect the environment and address pollution
  • The 17th amendment to the Constitution was ratified to counter Senate corruption
  • The 18th Amendment was passed prohibiting the sale and manufacture of alcohol
  • The 19th Amendment was passed that gave women the right to vote

Differences

  • Progressivism focused on changing the political system itself, whereas populism focused upon reforming the economic system.
  • Populism arose in the late 19th century while progressivism stated at the beginning of the 20th century.
  • Populism came from the farmers and the poor sections of the society while progressivism came from middle classes, who were fed up with the corruption of the rich and the against the government policies.

The movement beginning in the late 1800s to increase democracy in America by curbing the power of the corporation. It fought to end corruption in government and business, and worked to bring equal rights of women and other groups that had been left behind during the industrial revolution.

  • To protect social welfare- they wanted to make the conditions of industrialization better. (Ex. The Salvation Army)
  • To promote moral improvement- Americanization and conflicts with immigrant culture. Prohibition.
  • To create economic reform
  • Government reform- End gov. corruption (end child labor, voting reform, 19th amendment.)
  • Ida Tarbell- Muckraker who exposed the corruption of the oil industry in her work "A History of Standard Oil"
  • Upton Sinclair- muckraker who revealed the corruption of the meat industry in his work " The Jungle."
  • W.E.B. Du Bois-African American Progressive and advocate for African American equality, founded the NAACP.
  • Theodore Roosevelt- 26th president, known for conservationism and reformed the government through strict regulation of business.
  • Jane Adams- a social reformers and the founder of Hull House, she was also a prominent figure in the women's suffrage movement.

To allow farmers to make enough profit to pay for production as well as having some left over to support their family
