Introduction

  • Discovered by Clemens Alexander Winkler (1838-1904) in 1996
  • Professor at Freiberg School of Mines
  • Convinced new ore contained a new element that was yet to be discovered
  • Lead to the finding of Germanium which he named after his country, Germany

What is Germanium used for?

  • Fiber and infrared optics: lenses that appear opaque to the eye but are transparent
  • Bath salts in Japan for medical purposes
  • A catalyst to speed up or slow down chemical reactions
  • Dietary supplements
  • As a semiconductor for diodes and transistors
  • Weapon sighting systems
  • Alloys

Fun Facts

The existence was predicted by Russian chemist, Dmitri Mendeleev, who developed the periodic table. He said a new element would be found to fill an empty spot in his table because none that were already discovered could be put below silicon since none had properties like it.

Germanium is a metalloid that is in the middle of the carbon family, which is group 14 in the periodic table.

The origin of the element is from the Latin word Germania, meaning Germany.
